Karla's History Karla, a woman who has lived with complex mental health difficulties since childhood, first became involved with mental health services in the late 1990s. Coming from a family where mental health challenges were a recurring theme, her journey has included support from a range of services over many years. At times, she faced significant struggles, including hospital admissions and periods where managing her safety was very difficult.

Despite these challenges, Karla remained determined to move forward. She held a long-standing goal: to live independently in her own home and build a future where she could take control of her wellbeing.

"I always wanted a life that felt like mine - to have my own place, to make my own choices, and to feel safe." Karla's Admission Karla joined Aspire Health and Care in 2019, following several residential and hospital placements. She was ready to focus on recovery in an environment designed to support her growth. Our residential programmes integrate psychiatric and therapeutic input alongside life skills training, giving individuals like Karla the chance to develop practical coping strategies while building confidence for the future.

"When I first came here, I was nervous. But I soon realised the team really understood me and wanted to help me reach my goals. I felt supported straight away." Karla's Care During her time at Aspire, Karla benefitted from a structured and personalised programme. She engaged with therapeutic interventions, took part in life skills training, and explored positive ways to manage her wellbeing. The calm environment helped her to feel settled and safe, while daily routines encouraged her to develop independence.

She also participated in a wide range of activities tailored to her interests, including creative projects such as arts and crafts. These provided a valuable outlet for expression and built her confidence further.

"I love doing diamond art and crafts - it really helps me focus and calm down. The staff encouraged me to keep doing the things I enjoy, and that made such a difference."

Importantly, Karla worked closely with staff to strengthen her ability to cope during difficult moments. She developed healthier strategies, became more confident in asking for help when she needed it, and grew her resilience over time.

"The staff were always there for me. They didn’t judge me - they gave me practical tools to get through the bad days and reminded me of what I could achieve."

Our approach also encouraged Karla to reconnect with her wider community. Staff supported her to access local facilities, build confidence outside of the home, and practice skills that would be vital for independent living. Karla Today

By February 2025, Karla had achieved her long-term ambition: she successfully moved on independently.

"Staff really gave me the stepping stone I needed. They taught me how to manage on my own, but they were always there to guide me when I needed it. I wouldn’t be where I am now without them."

Karla now manages her day-to-day life with greater independence, budgeting her money, looking after her home, and maintaining her relationships.

"I've came so far and feel so proud. For years I thought I’d never have my own place - but now I do. And I know I can keep moving forward."
