Matthew's History Matthew, a young man diagnosed with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, Dissocial Personality Disorder, and a mild learning disability, has experienced emotional and behavioural difficulties since childhood. First referred to CAMHS at the age of 10 following his parents’ separation, he began struggling with his mental health early in life. He's spent much of his adolescence and adulthood in and out of mental health services, often in response to crises involving substance use or suicidal ideation. By the time Matthew arrived at Chilwell House, he had a long history of inpatient admissions, including multiple hospital stays in Glasgow and Plymouth, detentions under the Mental Health Act, and frequent presentations to A&E. His life had been marked by instability, emotional distress, and difficulty maintaining his safety and wellbeing in the community. Matthew's Admission Matthew arrived at Chilwell House as an emergency admission, initially intended to stay just one week — but stayed for two months. He had recently been hospitalised following a seizure related to alcohol withdrawal and was struggling both physically and mentally. "I was at a nadir both mentally and physically. I was in a very dark place having just been in hospital suffering from alcohol withdrawal." The team described Matthew as debilitated by anxiety, with a lack of understanding about his own needs. He had just left a placement of four and a half years, and the transition had been deeply unsettling. "I was unsure how I felt when I first came, as I felt lost. I had to leave my last placement after four and a half years — otherwise, I’m certain I would have died. I didn’t really know what to expect." When asked what he wanted from his time at Chilwell House, Matthew shared a simple but profound goal: stability — and the strength to reduce his alcohol use so he could enjoy life again. Matthew’s Care From the start, the staff at Chilwell House focused on rebuilding Matthew’s confidence, supporting his recovery, and helping him rediscover structure. He completed daily living assessments, built an understanding of his medication and mental health needs, and committed himself to sobriety. "I would describe my time with you guys as a very productive and settled time. With your support, I have achieved more than I’d have dreamed." When reflecting on what made the biggest difference, Matthew pointed not to any one intervention, but to the humanity and consistency of the team around him. "For me, just spending time and speaking and listening to me was what I needed. Also, looking after my medication was vital for my recovery." Progress came gradually but steadily. By moving at Matthew’s pace, the team helped him build trust — which became the foundation for meaningful growth. "They took things slowly with me and showed they cared — whether it was by keeping me safe when I felt low or by following through with their promises. " Sobriety, however, didn’t come easily. It was one of the most difficult aspects of his recovery. "The hardest part was staying sober and positive. I overcame these with wisdom, willpower, and staff support." Matthew Today Matthew has now been sober for three months — a huge milestone, and one he never thought he’d reach. "I’m most proud of myself for managing to stay clean and sober. With the great support I had, it was a lot easier than I could’ve ever imagined." Having made significant progress, Matthew has now stepped down to our supported living service - Jubilee House, where he has moved into his very own flat and continuing his journey toward independence. "I feel ready and know it’s time to move on. I am being brilliantly supported by staff and management." When asked if he would recommend Aspire to others, Matthew didn’t hesitate. "I would highly recommend Aspire to anybody. The great support is bespoke, and being here with kind and supportive staff has changed my life." His final reflection speaks volumes about the impact of his time with us: "Thank you very much for all of your kindness, support, and for not giving up. Being with you guys has saved my life." We are incredibly proud of Matthew — of the courage he’s shown, the growth he’s achieved, and the hope he now carries with him into the next chapter of his life.
