John's History
John is a 60-year-old gentleman with a diagnosis of Mixed Personality Disorder. He has spent nearly 30 years in institutions, much of that time in secure hospital settings following offences committed in the early 1990s. Over time, and with the right support, John engaged extensively in psychological therapy, where he addressed complex behaviours and developed meaningful insight into his mental health. Throughout his time in secure services, John made steady progress and demonstrated increasing independence. His move into rehabilitation services marked a turning point in his journey — particularly in his efforts to reconnect with the wider community and rebuild positive relationships, including with his sister who remains a strong source of support.
John’s Admission
John joined Goldhill House in October 2023, after decades in secure hospitals and prisons. At the time, he needed support across several aspects of day-to-day living — including managing appointments, budgeting, food hygiene, and finding purpose through work or volunteering. He also recognised the emotional challenges that could come with transitioning back into community life after so long in institutional settings.
“When I first came to Goldhill, it was a new beginning for me. At first, I was a little nervous and unsure, but once I settled in, I was happy. My goal was always to get my independence back and to live in the community again.”
John’s Care
During his time at Goldhill, John demonstrated remarkable commitment to his recovery. With the support of staff, he gradually regained independence in all aspects of daily life. He also became a Positive Behaviour Support Champion, where he acted as a peer advocate and contributed to creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for other service users.
He quickly became known among staff and peers not only for his kindness, but for his baking skills, regularly preparing treats that lifted spirits around the service.
“I’ve got a very good relationship with all the staff at Goldhill. They really helped me through my time here. The one-to-one time with staff helped me to build trust again.”
John remained motivated throughout his stay, attending his sessions, preparing for discharge, and staying focused on his long-term goal: living independently in the community, close to his sister in Chesterfield.
John Today
In early 2025, John moved on to Jubilee House, Aspire’s supported living service in Chesterfield. This move represents a huge milestone in his recovery — the first time in decades that he is living in the community, with support tailored to his needs and strengths.
“I’m proud of everything I’ve done. Goldhill has given me a platform to feel positive about myself. I’m more than ready — I’ve been on a long journey.”
John also reflected on the contrast between his earlier experiences and his recent progress:
“I spent a long time in NHS hospitals, but being here at Goldhill, I’ve seen nothing but positivity. I’ve had a first-class journey.”
With his resilience, warmth, and strong sense of purpose, John continues to inspire everyone around him. We are incredibly proud of his progress and are excited to see what this next chapter will bring.
