Joe's History
Joe, a man with a diagnosis of Paranoid Schizophrenia, has been known to mental health services for many years. In the past, he faced significant challenges with his mental health, including hospital admissions, periods of instability in the community, and times where he struggled to keep safe. Substance use and strained relationships added to the difficulties he experienced.
Despite these challenges, Joe has always had a strong creative side. His love for art and music gave him an outlet for expression, even during difficult periods in his life.
Joe's Admission
Joe joined Jubilee House in May 2024, following several years in secure hospital settings where he had worked hard and made progress in his recovery. Transitioning into supported living marked a big step forward for him. On arrival, he was hopeful about change but recognised the challenges he faced. He spoke openly about his goals of improving his mental health, learning to manage himself, and building towards independence.
"I was hopeful and ready for change. I struggled with my moods and mental health, but my goal was to progress independently when I began this journey."
The team welcomed Joe into the service, focusing on creating stability and helping him settle into a supported living environment where he could continue his journey towards independence.
Joe's Care
At Jubilee House, Joe made considerable progress in his recovery. With consistent support, he developed confidence in managing daily living skills such as cooking, budgeting, and keeping his flat clean and organised. He engaged well with services, took responsibility for his medication, and committed himself to sustaining his wellbeing.
"I enjoyed the whole experience. The staff were reassuring and supportive, and all my needs were met no matter the circumstance."
Joe’s creativity flourished during this time. He began performing at open mic nights, sharing his passion for music, and produced artwork that is now proudly displayed on the walls of Jubilee House. His creative outlets became an important part of his recovery, helping him manage stress, stay motivated, and build self-esteem.
"Jubilee has been the best support system I have ever been in - 10/10. The flats are top quality and the staff are always friendly and motivating."
Joe also reflected on the importance of structure in his recovery. With encouragement from staff, he developed a weekly routine and maintained it with pride. He even chose to take part in our face-to-face staff training sessions, sharing his perspective and experiences to help others learn more about mental health.
"The hardest part was learning to manage myself in all areas - but I achieved this with the helpful staff and my own determination."
By engaging with his support team and taking each step at his own pace, Joe grew in confidence, character, and independence. Joe Today
Joe has now successfully moved on from Jubilee House into his very own independent flat in the community. He manages his finances, looks after his home, and continues to build strong relationships with his family - especially his two sons, who remain central to his life.
Reflecting on his journey, Joe shared:
"I’m most proud of my character development and the skills I’ve learned for independence. I feel ready for the next steps."
He also wanted to acknowledge the role of the service and staff who supported him along the way:
"A big thanks to all the staff."
We are proud to have supported Joe during this stage of his journey and wish him every success as he continues to build on his independence and move forward with confidence.
