John's History
John is a gentleman in his 60s with a diagnosis of Mixed Personality Disorder. He spent almost 30 years within institutional settings, including secure hospitals and custodial environments, following offences committed in the early 1990s.
During this time, John engaged extensively in psychological therapies, working to address complex behaviours and develop greater insight into his mental health and past experiences. Over the years he demonstrated consistent progress within secure services, gradually building independence and developing the skills needed to move forward in his recovery.
His transition into rehabilitation services marked a significant step in his journey, particularly in rebuilding links with the community and strengthening supportive relationships with family members.
John's Admission
John was admitted to Goldhill House in 2023, Aspire’s residential service, where he spent approximately 18 months continuing his recovery after many years in secure environments. During this time, he demonstrated strong commitment to his progress and gradually regained independence across many aspects of daily living.
With the support of the team, John was able to build confidence in managing routines, engaging with staff, and preparing for the next stage of his recovery. His progress enabled him to step down to Jubilee House, Aspire’s supported living service, marking a significant milestone in his pathway towards community living.
"Aspire is run differently, more positive than I was used to. I felt hopeful as it was a big step forward"
John's Care
In early 2025, John moved to Jubilee House in Chesterfield. This transition represented the first time in decades that he had the opportunity to live in a community-based setting with structured support tailored to his individual needs.
Staff worked closely with John to promote independence while ensuring he felt supported in developing new skills and routines. “I felt reassured that staff at Jubilee were always there to help me with my mental health and learning new skills.”
During his time at Jubilee House, John progressed to Stage 6 medication management, demonstrating the ability to independently order and collect his medication while maintaining a stable daily routine. With encouragement from staff, John also applied to join the local housing register - a significant step towards achieving his long-term goal of living independently.
Even during difficult personal circumstances, the team ensured that additional support was in place to help John maintain his stability and wellbeing. “I always felt supported throughout, even during difficult times.”
John Today
In early 2026, after 11 months at Jubilee House, John achieved one of his long-term goals when he was offered his own accommodation within the community.
This move represents a major achievement in his recovery journey and reflects the commitment, resilience, and determination he has shown throughout his time with Aspire services.
Reflecting on his progress, John shared:
“I stayed focused on my end goal and didn’t rush into anything.”
“I’m most proud of achieving my goal of having my own place. I’m grateful for the support from both Jubilee House and Goldhill House. I always found the staff approachable across both services.”
John continues to move forward positively, maintaining the independence and stability he worked hard to achieve. His journey highlights the importance of consistent support, structured rehabilitation, and a strong focus on individual goals in supporting people to successfully transition back into the community.
